Work on the tel commences Sunday AM and ends Thursday afternoon (except for the first week of excavation which commences on Monday and ends Friday afternoon). Three meals a day are provided on workdays. Weekend accommodation is included in the Expedition fee but meals are not provided (see 'What about Grub?'). Team Members are free to stay on the Kibbutz and enjoy the facilities or leave camp on Thursday and return on Saturday evening.

Daily work on the tel and in the camp begins at 5:00AM and finishes by 1PM. It resumes in camp at 4:00 PM with the processing of finds, a requirement for all Team Members.

Most afternoons and evenings include pottery reading and lectures. Please note that the schedules may change slightly due to extenuating circumstances. e.g. Lectures may be held later in the day.

15:00-17:00 Team Members arrive

14:00 A Complimentary bus departs for the Kibbutz from the Tel Aviv North Bus Station (Arlozorov). This departure time is tentative and may be changed depending upon flight arrival times

Monday, 16 June

Excavation begins - Day 1


04:20 Your alarm clock should ring!

04:45 Bus to the tel, carrying required equipment

05:00-08:30 Work on site

08:30-09:00 Breakfast buffet on site

09:00-11:00 Work on site

11:00-11:15 Break

11:15-12:00 Work on site

12:00-13:00 Orientation Tour of Site including Water System

13:15-14:00 Lunch, Kibbutz dining hall

14:00-16:00 Rest/Recreation

16:00-17:00 Introduction to Processing Finds: Pottery and Bone Washing

17:00 Lecture: Introduction to Excavation, The 'How', 'Why', & 'Where'

19:30 Lecture: Introduction to Megiddo, Part 1

21:00 Collapse into Bed!!!

Friday, 20 June

Day 5 of the excavation


Free weekend begins for Team Members in the afternoon. Relax by the Kibbutz pool or explore Israel. (Note: This 1st weekend is only a one day weekend!)

All Team Members should be back on site by early evening.

Days 6 – 9 of the Excavation

Free weekend begins in the afternoon for Team Members not enrolled in the Education program

Friday, 27 June

Full day Study Tour to other archaeological sites currently being excavated for all enrolled in the education program. Free time after tour to relax or travel.

Team Members should be back on site by early evening

Free weekend begins in the afternoon for Team Members Relax by the Kibbutz pool or explore Israel

The Megiddo Expedition is undertaken under the auspices of Tel Aviv University, in conjunction with The George Washington University as Senior Consortium Member and Loyola Marymount University and Vanderbilt University as Consortium Members. The Expedition is directed by Israel Finkelstein and David Ussishkin (Tel Aviv University), with Eric Cline (The George Washington University) serving as Associate Director (USA).
